National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education (MoE) to rank universities or colleges of higher learning in India. No doubt, ranking universities or colleges of higher learning is not an easy task, it is necessary for deep knowledge of the higher learning system in India. NIRF is the first-ever made by the government to rank higher educational institutions (HEIs) in the nation. Rankings are declared by the Education Ministry every year to promote competitive excellence among the higher learning institutions in India, which is based on the parameters. These parameters are discussed in detail. On July 15, 2022, the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, declared the NIRF Ranking 2022. NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) is a framework that outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the nation. HEIs (Higher educational institutions) in India have increased tremendously over the years, which are necessary and effective mechanisms to rank their academic excellence and standards. Every year, the Education Ministry declares the NIRF Ranking list to promote competitive excellence among the higher learning institutions, universities or colleges across the country.

In the ‘Engineering category’, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras) bagged the number one position every year till now. The first five positions have remained the same. IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay remained in the second and third ranks, respectively and the IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur remained in the fourth and fifth positions as per every year's NIRF rankings.

What is NIRF Ranking?

NIRF Full Form National Institutional Ranking Framework was approved and launched by the Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on September 29, 2015. It is a framework that outlines a methodology to rank institutions in the nation. The NIRF Ranking is beneficial to students preparing to study higher learning in India in knowing the ranking of institutes.

Methodology of NIRF Ranking 2024

A Basic Committee was set up by MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The methodology also draws from the full recommendations and broad understanding reached by this committee.
