University of Pondicherry is Puducherry's central university. Pondicherry University was established in 1985 to encompass Puducherry Union Territory as well as Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar. It has 3 campuses with the main campus located at Puducherry. The University of Pondicherry has been a major university in the country since it began in 1985. In the academic year 1995-1996, the University became a member of the field of distance education to meet the goals of students who would otherwise fail to pursue university education on campus. The University has developed many creative and job-oriented academic programmes to reach all the sections of students who are distant from the main stream of university graduates.
The university is authorized by the UGC and provides a UG/PG diploma and doctoral programmes in the field of arts, trade, science, administration, engineering, law and education. Integrated Courses like M.Sc. and M.A., PG Diploma & Certificate Add-On courses are also offered by Pondicherry University. The University of Pondicherry has entrance-based admission. On the basis of CAT score or university test, the university permits the MBA admission. For the M.Tech (Computer Biology) programme, the selection is carried out in conjunction with the University of Anna on the basis of a common entrance examination carried out by the Pondicherry University.
Pondicherry University does not only include common features like libraries and dorms, but also contains extra-curricular activities for the general growth of the student, such as the quiz club, the math club, the earth sciences club etc. It concentrates across a broad range of areas on both high-quality teaching and creative research.

In the academic year in which admission is required, the candidate should qualify for the common entry test university offers. However, qualification in the entry test alone gives no permission to participate in a course. A candidate will be eligible for admission in addition to qualifying for the Common Entry Test only if they pass a qualifying degree test before the beginning of admission counseling and obtain minimal requirements for the subject(s)/courses concerned.
