The UGC (University Grants Commission) has announced that all the students are now able to pursue the two full-time degree programs at the same time. Earlier, according to the rules and regulations of UGC, none of the students is allowed to pursue only one full-time degree along with online/ diploma /short-term programs.
UGC Chairperson Prof M Jagdish Kumar said on Tuesday (12th April 2022) that this decision taken under the National Education Policy (NEP) will give freedom to students to pursue education in different fields at the same time. He said that this option will be available only for UGC the approved institutes and universities and it will come into effect from the 2022-23 academic sessions.
These UGC guidelines are applicable to all the Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and Diploma programs. In physical mode, a student can do two full-time academic programs and the class timing that is provided to the students will not get matched with the class timing of another degree program. But both the programs that are pursued by the student should be of the same level.
University will decide the admission and attendance policy:
In the UGC guidelines, it is stated that the Admission and the attendance policy will be decided by the university. If you want to pursue two-degree programs at the same time in physical mode, then it will be done under the university admission process. And students who have already done two degrees before are not going to get any benefit from these guidelines.
Also, conducting two-degree programs at the same time is not mandatory or compulsory for any of the institutes or universities.
Prof M Jagdish Kumar says that the demand for high-quality higher education is increasing rapidly across the country. But we are only able to provide admission to only 3% of students on the physical campus.
