Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU) is an open university in Kota, Rajasthan. Formerly known as Kota Open University it was founded on July 23, 1987. concentrating on the humanities, commerce, library science, and informatics It is geographically dispersed throughout Rajasthan, with regional centres in Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Udaipur, Kota, and Bharatpur, as well as several other "learning centres" in cities and an additional centre in New Delhi. In step with UGC Committee chairman, Late prof G. Reddy, " Developing a full-fledged Open University through distance education is feasible in Rajasthan, due to its established distance learning system". This provided the inspiration for putting in place a state-level Open University in Rajasthan. This provided the inspiration for setting up a state-level open university in Rajasthan.
The formation of VMOU (Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University) occurred with the merger of two correspondence courses institutes, namely Institute of Correspondence Studies and Continuing Education Jaipur and (College of Correspondence Studies, Udaipur). To make the vast array of distance education resources better coordinated and to improve education for Rajasthan residents, the VMOU was established.
Every year, around 35000 students enrol at the institution. The university is continuously looking for opportunities to collaborate with other open universities. It offers 80 courses at various levels. Undergraduate, postgraduate, and postgraduate diploma programmes are available at the university. Diploma and certificate programmes are also available at the university. It provides lateral entry programmes in journalism, MCA, and M.SC. Application fees for MBA, B.Ed., and lateral entry programmes are submitted through challan. However, for other UG and PG programmes, application fees must be paid by credit/debit card or net banking. This institution offers an online application process.
Seminars and workshops are held to help students improve their skills and knowledge. VMOU Organizes industrial visits for students to learn more.
At the moment, VMOU provides a variety of UG, PG, and Diploma programmes in a variety of subjects through its authorised study centres. Candidates must have completed 10+2 from a recognised board of education in order to be considered for admission to UG programmes. Admissions to VMOU takes place in two cycles: January and July. Admission to all VMOU programmes (excluding B.Ed. and MBA) is mostly dependent on a candidate's aggregate in a previous qualifying degree/ test. This Open University also provides lateral entry admission to several of its programmes in the second and third semesters.
