Introduction

The Tamil Nadu Open University became the first university in the state to provide a self-learning university. It was founded in 2003. The UGC-DEB, NCTE, RCI, and AICTE have formally validated TNOU's academic programs. The University has been granted the UGC's 12B Status. In 2003–04, the academic operations got started. The University has grown tremendously over the last 20 years. With over a million students enrolled in 234 programs at different levels covering a wide range of disciplines and skills, from certificate to postgraduate programs, the institution is spread across the state through 11 academic schools, 5 support divisions, 1 media center, a strong network of learner support centers, and community colleges. With approval from the UGC-DEB, the TNOU began offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs. The Government of Tamilnadu selected the TNOU in 2008 and gave it the order to give skill development programs to provide Community Colleges with Skill Based Education and Training for the state's underprivileged populations. Tamil Nadu Distance learning offers distance programs which are recognized by an Act (No.27 of 2002) of the Legislative Assembly of the Government of the Tamil Nadu state and approved by (the University Grants Commission), DEB (Distant Education Bureau), RCI (Rehabilitation Council of India), and NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education).

 

Accreditations and Approvals
Tamil Nadu Open University has been recognized by esteemed organizations such as the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), University Grants Commission (UGC), and NAAC (Grade 'A+'). These accreditations have demonstrated the legitimacy of TNOU's degrees and diplomas in both the academic and professional areas and as a result, its degrees are recognized across the nation.
 

Why Choose Tamil Nadu Open University

The University has been meeting the educational needs of the underprivileged and marginalized members of society. The Tamil Nadu government founded the Tamil Nadu Open University to expand access to higher education and enhance the caliber of education provided through open and distance-learning modes by working with such State regulations. The Tamilnadu government designated the TNOU and issued an order (G.O.M.s.No-163 dated 22-05-2008) requiring it to offer skill development programs to deliver Skill Based Education and Training to the state's underprivileged groups through Community Colleges.
