North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) was founded in 1973 by an Act (24 of 1973) approved by both Houses of Parliament. On May 26th, 1973, it was issued in the Gazette of India together with the First Schedule of the Act, that included the University's Statutes. According to the act, the University's objectives are to spread advance knowledge by providing research and instructional facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit. Also, to consider the improvement of the socioeconomic conditions and welfare of the people of the areas of the North-eastern region, especially the intellectual, academic and Cultural advancement.
Shillong, Meghalaya, is home to the University. NEHU has two campuses, one in Shillong in Mawkynroh, Umshing, and the other one in Tura at Chandmari, Tura. Initially, the Shillong University's academic departments and administration were housed in rented premises. However, NEHU quickly purchased two excellent city properties, one belonging to the erstwhile Maharaja of Mayurbhanj and the other to the Rani of Bijni. The academic departments were then relocated to these two locations. Meanwhile, the Government of Meghalaya bought a large area of land (about 1225 acres) at Umshing, a little beyond the city boundaries, for the University's permanent campus. This lovely property, gradually sloping and densely forested - a great site for the University - was a gift from the Meghalaya government.
NEHU is a central university that has gained NAAC accreditation with a ‘A' rating. It has 66 undergraduate institutions and eight professional institutes associated with it. North-Eastern Hill University consists of 44 academic departments, two study centres organised into eight schools that provide Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and doctorate level programmes in a variety of areas.
