1. Anna University 

The first university in the list of top government colleges in Tamil Nadu is Anna University. The university was established in 1978 and is recognized under AICTE and UGC. This public university has achieved the status of "University of Excellence" (UPE).

2. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University 

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is a 100-year-old premier institution providing higher education in agriculture. TNAU started in 1868 with the establishment of an agricultural school in Saidapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, and later moved to Coimbatore in 1906. In 1920, the university was affiliated to Madras University and three colleges were introduced. -Annual Degree Program Until 1946, Coimbatore Agricultural College and Research Institute was the only agricultural educational institution in the whole of South India. 5. Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University

6. Manonmaniam Sundarana University

Manonmaniam Sundarana University (MSU) is a dynamic institution of higher learning located in rural southern Tamil Nadu, with a campus of 550 acres.

This university is located in three southern districts of Tamil Nadu namely Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari.

It is named after the eminent Tamil poet and scholar Prof. P. Sundaram Pillai (1855-1897), author of the famous poetic drama Manonmaniam. 
The motto of the university is "Achieving the unattainable". Almost 2800 students study directly in this institution. The university has 102 affiliated colleges and 6 university colleges under its jurisdiction with around 1,30,993 students in regular mode and around 13,000 students in distance mode.

 

7. Tamil Nadu Open University 

This distance university was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2002 and appears to be on the list of top 10 government universities in Tamil Nadu.
It is the only open university in Tamil Nadu and the 17th open university in India. The university offers UG and PG courses in various streams like Arts, Science, Commerce, Education, and Management.

8. Alagappa University

10. Periyar University

The Government of Tamil Nadu established Periyar University at Salem on 17 September 1997 by the provisions of the Periyar University Act, 1997. The university covers a region that includes four districts: Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri. The university has achieved 12(B) and 2(f) ranks from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, and was re-accredited by NAAC in 2021 with an A++ grade. The university has been ranked 63rd among Indian universities by MHRD NIRF 2022.
