YCMOU was established in July 1989. It was created by the Maharashtra State Legislature Act XX of 1989 and was aptly named after the renowned political leader of Maharashtra and the founder of modern Maharashtra Yashwantrao Chavan. The university is a member of organizations such as the Asian Association of Open Universities, the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
YCMOU is the fifth largest open university in India. And is recognized by UGC and UGC DEB. AICTE, the Council of Technical Education and the Council of Architecture have also approved the university (for architecture courses). Established in 1989, YCMOU provides more than 100 offline and online study courses, as well as 10 regional centres and more than 300 multi-program study centres.
Collaborates with international universities/institutions such as the Commonwealth Secretariat (London), Commonwealth of Learning (Canada), Wawasan Open University (Malaysia), Brock University (Canada), The Chartered Management Institute of London (UK), Athabasca University (Canada) and the International Food Policy Research Institute for the Global Open Food and Agriculture University (USA).
Apart from this, the university has a separate placement cell that takes care of all placement-related activities. Companies like Wipro, IBM and TCS have hired students from this university over the years. To meet the financial requirements of students, the university offers several scholarships based on merit and need, including the Mahadbt scholarship and others. Candidates can also choose to receive the scholarship at the time of admission or apply for one of the many scholarships awarded by the Government of India.

Selection to the YCMOU is mostly determined by merit. Admission to B.Com, BCA, BBA and BFA programmes require 10+2 in relevant subjects. Admission to M.Sc., M.Com, MA and M.Li.Sc programmes require a bachelor's degree in the respective discipline. For admission to MBA and MPH programmes, the university administers the Common Entrance Test (CET). A Master's degree with at least 55% in aggregate is required for PhD programmes.
