Introduction

The University of Himachal Pradesh was established by an Act of the Legislature of Himachal Pradesh on 22 July 1970 in response to the needs and aspirations of a Union A territory poised for full statehood in the Union of India on 25 January 1971. The only multi-faculty residential and affiliated university in the state to impart higher education to urban, rural, and tribal areas through formal and distance channels.

Distance education

Immediately after its establishment in 1970, Himachal Pradesh University took a bold step towards the dissemination of knowledge and democratization of educational opportunities when it established the Directorate of Correspondence Courses in 1971. The university played a pioneering role in starting a distance education program at the graduate level. It was the first to provide post-graduate level instruction in social sciences, humanities, commerce, and teacher education through distance learning.
