Overview

Every year, the UPSC conducts an ESE/IES exam to recruit candidates for various specialized positions under the Union Government departments. The IES is the Central Civil Service and after clearing this exam candidates can be posted anywhere across India. This IES exam is conducted to recruit applicants for various engineering positions into multiple departments under the Government of India. The Engineering Services exam is conducted for four the branches of engineering as follows:

  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering

In the past, the exam was conducted as the Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam and was considered as the one of the toughest exams. Every year, nearly, approx. two as applicants appear in the examination. IES exam recruits candidates for the Group A and Group B officers at the technical positions. The IES exam has three stages of the recruitment process as- Preliminary, IES Mains Exam and Personality Test. On the basis of the merit list candidates will be selected for the available posts.

  • Applicants must be either
  • A Bhutanese Subject or Indian Citizenship or Nepalese Subject or Tibetan Refugee who permanently settled in India before 1, January 1962
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old and not more than 30 years old. 
  • Candidates must need to hold an engineering degree from a recognized university or institute
  • Applicants who have Engineering Degree or Diploma from the foreign university/ institute or college

Exam Application Process

  • To fill the application form of UPSC IES applicants need to visit the official website 
  • From the homepage, click on the online Application for multiple UPSC examinations
  • Select the New Users option
  • A new window will open, fill in the personal details for registration
  • Enter login credentials and fill other required information
  • Pay the application fees i.e. Rupees 200
  • Submit the application form

 

Selection Process of IES Exam:

The selection process of IES will be based on the three stages. First applicants need to clear Prelims as well as the Mains exam. Only applicants who clear the Paper 1 and Paper 2 exams of the Prelims exam will be eligible to appear in the Mains exam.
Applicants who obtain the required marks in the Prelims and Mains exam will participate in the IES Personality test.

Ans: Both IAS and IES exams are the toughest exams and need extensive preparation. 
 

Ques: How many times a candidate can apply for the IES exam?
Ans: There is no limitation to apply for the IES exam. Only applicants must be under the age limit criteria as decided by the authority.
 

Ques: Can Computer Science students eligible for the IES exam?
