Introduction

Ethiraj College for Women was established in the year 1948 in Chennai. It was started with undergraduate courses in Economics, Botany, Chemistry, History, Zoology, and English Literature. Subsequently, Commerce, Mathematics, and Physics at the UG level, and a number of post-graduate (PG) courses were introduced in between 1968 to 1978. Later in 1981, the college started with evening college followed by an introduction of MPhil and PhD courses. Various job-oriented self-financing UG courses were started from 1990 to 2000. Today, Ethiraj College for Women spreads over 2,66,000 sq. ft. which includes a Science block, old and new library block, Hostel, Business studies, Information Technology Block and Open Air Theatre. The Open Air Theatre which was constructed long back in 1948 with the establishment of the college, even today is considered to be the pride of the college.
