Himachal Pradesh Administrative Services Exam

Application Process

HPAS uses the same selection procedure as UPSC and other Public Service Commissions. The HPAS test has a three-stage selection procedure.

  • Stage –I: The HPPSC administers the HPAS prelims test at exam centers around the state. If an applicant's Preliminary exams are conducted offline with pen and paper. A prelims test for HPAS consists of two objective-type questions papers. The two papers of the HPAS preliminary exam are Paper I General Studies and Paper-II Aptitude test. Both papers are worth 250 points and have a time limit of two hours. The qualifying marks for the paper II Aptitude Test are set by HPPSC at 33% of the total. Paper-II grades are not factored into the HPAS Prelims exam outcome. In the HPAS prelims test, marks are deducted for incorrect answers. As a penalty, one-third of the marks allotted to each question for which the candidate provided an incorrect answer would be deducted.
  • Stage – II: The major HPAS test: The HPAS Prelims results narrow the field of applicants for the HPAS main test. The number of candidates allowed to the main test will be about 20 times the total number of vacancies to be filled through this examination in the year.
    • The second stage of the selection procedure is the major exam. There are eight descriptive papers in the HPAS main exam. There are six required papers and two optional papers chosen by the candidates.
  • Stage – III: HPAS Interview/Viva-voce: The HPAS Viva-voce is the exam's final step. Candidates who pass the HPAS mains test are invited to an interview. A total of 150 marks are available for the Interview and Viva-voce. The interview will take place at the HPPSC headquarters in Shimla.
    • After the interview, a final merit list will be compiled based on the applicants' performance in the HPAS Main written test and interview. The number of candidates chosen will be determined by the number of available positions.
