The Sambalpur University Act was approved by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966, for the people of Western Odisha's long-held goal of establishing a university. The University began operations on January 1, 1967, with Prof. Parsuram Mishra as the first Vice-Chancellor. Hon'ble Chancellor A.N.Khosla opened the University on January 4, 1967, and it began operations in 1967 in a rented private building in Dhanupali, Sambalpur, then in a Government building in Ainthapali, Sambalpur, from 1968 to 1972. The University was relocated to its current site, Jyoti Vihar in Burla, in 1973. The University's slogan is "Vidyaya Vindatemrutam." This department was established at the institution in 1999. This university has a letter of approval from DEB India.
The University provides various amenities to boarders at the Hostels, such as a reading room with newspapers and magazines, a common room with a television, first aid, a guest room etc. For the advantage of students, the Central Canteen has been established near the Hostel Campus. In addition, one Health Centre, two Nationalized Banks, one Auditorium, one Post-Office, one Police-Out Post, one Faculty House, and one Community Centre have been constructed on the University Campus to serve students/teachers and staff.
