In 1981, the University of Madras established a first-rate Directorate of Distance Education to assist students in realizing their academic, professional, and personal objectives. It has served the field of distance education for more than 25 years. Currently, IDE offers sixteen undergraduate courses, and twenty-two postgraduate courses under the CBCS pattern, sixteen diploma courses, and sixteen certificate courses.
