SYMBIOSIS SCHOOL FOR LIBERAL ARTS, (SSLA) PUNE

College | 2011

Introduction

Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts (SSLA) is India's first liberal arts college to offer a full-time four-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts (Liberal Arts) degree. Founded in 2011, SSLA offers a wide range of 20 specializations from various disciplines such as social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, computers, mathematics, and statistics, and professional courses such as media and business studies. The award of Bachelor of Arts (Liberal Arts) Honors or Bachelor of Science (Liberal Arts) Honors depends on the student's major area of specialization. A major means that students must complete 10 theses in their chosen field, while a minor requires students to study 6 theses in it. There are 3 routes to an Honors degree at SSLA –

  • 1 major specialization + 2 secondary specializations
  • 1 major specialization + 1 minor specialization + 6 optional subjects
  • 2 major specializations + 0 minor specializations + 2 additional optional subjects

In addition to majors and minors, SSLA's distinctive program structure offers required core courses that help students develop research, critical thinking, and analytical skills. More than 150 electives are also present in the institute's bouquet of offerings. To ensure that students take advantage of the many academic opportunities at SSLA, additional courses and cross-specialization audit courses (with specific minimum academic prerequisites/requirements) are also offered. With an inter-multi and trans-disciplinary approach, SSLA offers an education that brings together different disciplines not traditionally or typically offered at the undergraduate level. SSLA thus provides a complete liberal arts education.

In the dynamic world, we live in, the demand for skills in the economy and employment sector is constantly changing. These skills outlined at the World Economic Forum range from problem-solving to working with people and self-management to using and developing technology. These are the areas in which SSLA has been educating its students for the past decade. SSLA graduates become global citizens who have a multicultural worldview, are open-minded, and have learned to appreciate the greater similarities and lesser differences between people and cultures around the world.
