The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic Vishwavidyalaya) was formed by Madhya Pradesh Government Act No. 37 of 1995, as published in Gazette notification No. 537 on November 29, 1995. The university is situated in the rural environment of Katni, a medium-sized city in Madhya Pradesh. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic Vishwavidyalaya like every other statutory university in India, has been founded as a statutory university. MMYVV is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and is accredited by the UGC under Section 2 (F). The MMYVV is well-known for disseminating life-oriented Vedic education as well as job-oriented Modern education. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University is the first institution that has fully integrated Vedic Science and its technologies into the mainstream of modern education.
This university provides programmes and courses that lead to officially recognised higher education degrees in a variety of fields of study. Doctoral, Postgraduate (Acharya), Graduate (Shastri), and Diploma (Praman Patra) programmes are available in Maharishi Ved Vigyan, Yog, Jyotish, Darshan Shastra, Sthapatya Ved-Vastu Vidya, Vedic Swasthya Vidhan and Gandharva Ved-Indian Classical Music. In addition to Vedic studies, the university provides BA, BCA, BCOM, B.Sc(CS), DCA and PGDCA and MSC (CS) programmes. The University offers programmes like B.A.B.Ed, B.Ed and B.El.Ed that are approved by NCTE (the National Council of Teachers Education).
The MMYVV Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) was established in 2006 with the goal of ‘reaching the unreached' and providing the benefit of higher education to deserving students from semi-rural and rural areas, as well as prospective students who do not have the time or financial resources for full-time courses. DDE is located in Vijay Nagar, Jabalpur, at Lamti. Distance Education Council, in letter No. DEC/Univ/State/07/5647 dated 03-09-2007, granted temporary recognition for offering programmes approved by the University's statutory authority, which is still in effect.
There is an excellent network of student support available. Students can learn at their own speed and at their own location. In addition to Self-Instructional Material for study, library use, viewing of video aids, and interaction with counsellors and other students at study centres are also arranged. MMYVV has created its own study materials and SIMs (Self-Instructional Material) for a variety of courses. A minimum pass percentage of marks is required for admission to any of the Distance Education courses available without the requirement to take an entrance examination. Those who have taken a break from their studies to work/marry, etc., are now able to resume their studies. Being a recognised institution, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic Vishwavidyalaya conducts its own examinations and awards degrees that are approved and acknowledged by the University Grants Commission/Distance Education Council.
The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic Vishwavidyalaya provides UG/PG Courses, Certifications and Diploma programmes in the arts, science, commerce and Jyotish fields.
