The International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, originally known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre until 1970, was founded in July 1956 by the Government of India, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, and the United Nations. The Institute was modified to its current name in 1985 in order to promote the expansion of its academic activities. On August 14, 1985, the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India designated it as a "Deemed University" under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The International Institute for Population Sciences is the ESCAP region's regional Institute for Training and Research in Population Studies. The recognition has permitted the Institute's awarding of acknowledged degrees and cleared the ground for the Institute's growth as an academic institution. The Institute celebrated its completion of glorious 50 years in 2006.
Among other regional population centres, IIPS has a one-of-a-kind status. It was the first of its kind, and it serves a far bigger population than the other regional centres. The Institute is administered by the Government of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Institute has seven Academic Departments. Faculty and support staff come from a varied interdisciplinary background, with specialty in some basic areas of population sciences, and have been trained in India or overseas.
Aside from teaching and research, the Institute also consults with government and non-government organisations, as well as other academic institutions. Over the years, the Institute has assisted in the formation of a core of professionals in the fields of population and health in various ESCAP member nations. The Institute has trained students from 42 different nations in Asia and the Pacific area, Africa, and North America over the last 53 years. Many of those who have received training at the Institute currently hold prominent positions in the fields of population and health in the governments of many nations, universities and research institutes, as well as prestigious national and international organisations.
Over the last six decades, the Institute has hosted several national and international seminars and conferences on topics of global relevance in the field of population research. District Level Household Survey (DLHS), National Family Health Survey (NFHS), Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS India Project), Longitudinal Aging Study in India, Research Intervention on Sexual Health Theory to Action (RISHTA Project), YOUTH in India Project, Nutrition Surveys and Assessment of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), were all conducted by the Institute (LASI).
