An Uttar Pradesh university's first-year students pursuing a DPharma (Diploma in Pharmacy) allegedly wrote "Jai Shri Ram" and cricket players' names on their answer sheets to pass the exam. But the law eventually caught up.
At Jaunpur's state-run Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, two professors were suspended when it was reported that they had demanded money from students in exchange for grades on answer sheets featuring religious slogans, songs, and music. The event was made public after a former student of the institution submitted a request for information (RTI) challenging the marking of four students' answer sheets and complained to the governor's office, which is also the chancellor of the university.
In a letter to the governor, prime minister, chief minister, and vice-chancellor, student leader Divyanshu Singh claimed that, with the help of some university authorities, even students who received zero percent passed by receiving more than sixty percent of the possible points.
Then, on December 21, 2023, Raj Bhavan issued an order to look into the situation. The management of the university established a committee to look into the situation. The marks given to the pupils differed significantly when the copies were reassessed by outside academics. In one case, external evaluators determined that the same copies should have received just zero and four marks, even though the professors had given them 52 and 34 marks.
Two lecturers who assisted in the students' passing have now been ordered to be expelled by the university, according to sources.
