About GATE

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, commonly known as GATE is a national level examination conducted for the candidates aspiring to pursue Master’s degree programs and doctoral programs in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Architecture. On behalf of National Coordination Board (NCB) – GATE, Department of Higher Education and Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India, GATE is jointly conducted by IISC Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and on a rotational basis.
GATE is a compulsory requirement for candidates seeking admission and financial assistance to pursue Master’s and Doctoral programs in the institutes such as IITs, IISC, NITs, IIIT, GFTIs and other central government supporting universities in India. GATE scores are also used by the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for job recruitment. The exam is Computer Based Test (CBT) and the scores are valid for 3 years from the date of announcement of results.

Eligibility and Age Criteria GATE

  • Candidates with Bachelor’s degree (minimum of three years’ duration) or equivalent degree in the above specified field, from any recognized university
  • Candidates with Master’s degree or equivalent degree in the specified field, from any recognized university
  • Candidates with integrated Master’s or Dual degree (five years’ duration) courses can also apply
  • Candidates in the final year of their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree can also apply for the exam
  • International students in final year or having completed Bachelor’s degree(minimum 4 years) and Master’s degree (minimum 2 years) in engineering, technology and relevant science subjects
  • There is no specific age limit
